Ways to Stay Connected During Covid-19

During the Covid19 pandemic, face-to-face interactions seem like a thing of the past. Our feelings of connection can seem like they're slipping, and our relationships suffering.


Here we've listed some great ways to stay connected to those important to you whilst in self-isolation.


Letter writing


Whilst this may feel outdated, letter writing is alive and well! Talking about our current experiences and feelings feels a lot more intimate when written by hand.


Letter writing also allows us to free our creative juices. This can be a fun family activity; crafting something with your children to send to their grandparents other family members. It's a great way to pass the time whilst also staying connected to those you love.


Emailing


For all you youngsters out there, emailing may feel as outdated as letter writing. Emailing is actually a great way to stay connected to family members and friends all over the world.


Due to its format and the amount of data that can fit into one email - you can share a wealth of photos, videos, links and anecdotes to anyone you want. And you don't have to leave the host to post it!


Instant messaging


Instant messaging is a type of online chat that allows you to send and receive messages in real-time. It’s generally used for shorter length messages and ongoing conversations.


With today’s technology, you can send someone a message, photo, video or even an e-drawing at the tap of a button and generally receive a response instantly.


Some Great FREE Instant messaging options:

  • Facebook Messenger

  • WhatsApp

  • Texting

  • Instagram

  • Snapchat


Pick up the phone


A good old fashioned phone call is a great way to feel connected to someone when you just miss their voice. Calling your mum, dad, sibling, grandparents or best friend can be a fantastic way to instantly lift your mood and feel connected.


We would argue that phone calling is better than instant messaging as you can hear inflexions in their voice and have a more meaningful conversation.


Apart from using a phone number, other FREE ways to voice call someone include:

  • Whatsapp

  • Snapchat

  • Facebook Messenger

  • Skype


Video calling


Video Calling has the benefits of sending photos, videos and voice calling all rolled into one. This is where you can call someone and see them in real-time! They can show you around their Quarantine Castle or perform a Live Cooking Show just for you!


Some video calling platforms also have the options of playing games online together for an extra level of fun. Video calling is the perfect way to feel connected to someone you miss as you can hear their voice, see their face and talk for hours on end.


There are endless video calling platforms available, but some include:

  • Whatsapp

  • Zoom

  • Skype

  • Snapchat

  • Facebook messenger

  • House Party

  • FaceTime


Online Forums


One of the more unorthodox ways to stay connected during self-isolation is by joining an online forum or Facebook group. These groups can be formed around TV shows, favourite bands, the newest movies, sports teams or even video games.


You can join just one or as many as you like and talk to like-minded people who are obsessed with the same things you are. You may even make new friends in this time of social distancing. It is important, however, to ensure your cyber safety. Don’t add anyone you are uncomfortable talking to or if they are pressuring you to add them.


Whilst this lock-down may feel like it's keeping us apart, with our current technology we can still find fun and creative ways to stay connected.
